The Monash Medical Orchestra (MMO) is a non-profit ensemble that was established in 2011 by a group of passionate musicians who are studying medicine at Monash University. We recognise that while many medical students play musical instruments, it is difficult to continue to practise and perform whilst in medical school. We aim to provide our players the opportunity to share their musical interests, continue performing amidst a busy work and study schedule, and express themselves artistically and creatively.
Under the musical direction of Mr Robert Dora, the orchestra performs a variety of repertoire ranging from classical masterpieces to modern contemporary works, including some compositions specifically commissioned for our orchestra. Over the years our repertoire has included medleys of musicals such as The Lion King and Les Miserables, as well as famous classical works such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade amongst works by many other classical composers.
In 2011, the Monash Medical Orchestra held its inaugural concert on the 14th October. It was highly successful with over 200 people in attendance. Since then, the MMO have continued to hold greatly successful concerts, whilst concurrently raising awareness and funds for various charities, including Monash Children’s Cancer Centre in 2012, Operation Smile and Friends 4 Fiji in 2013 and Hush Music Foundation in 2014. We had an exciting year in 2015 where we held our first Chamber Concert and also travelled out to Gippsland for our first performance in the Monash Gippsland campus.
The MMO have further had the delight of inviting Monash University medical alumni and teaching staff to join us and perform solos throughout our various seasons and we look forward to continuing this tradition in 2017.
